Tourist Visits Drop by 6.3%
From January to October 2024, Yucatán’s main tourist attractions saw a 6.3% decrease in visits compared to the same period in 2023. The Board of Cultural and Tourist Services Units of the State of Yucatán (Cultur) reported that the attractions received 2,244,196 visits, down from 2,394,510 the previous year.
Chichén Itzá Sees Increase, Others Decline
While most tourist stops experienced a decline, Chichén Itzá saw a 1.8% increase in visits, with 1,811,839 visitors compared to 1,779,379 in the same period last year. In contrast, the archaeological zone of Uxmal reported a 9% drop, with 232,446 visits in 2024 compared to 255,462 in 2023.
Impact of Closures and Reductions
Dzibilchaltún, closed for several months due to the Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (Promeza) led by the INAH, registered only 6,008 visits, a significant decrease from 53,984 last year. Ek Balam also saw a reduction of 15.5%, with 96,689 visits in 2024 compared to 114,457 in 2023.
Beach Destinations and Other Sites
Beach destinations like Celestún and “El Corchito” in Progreso also experienced declines. Celestún registered 26,912 visits in 2024, down from 38,932, a 30.9% decrease. “El Corchito” saw a 32.8% drop, with 70,302 tourists in 2024 compared to 104,551 the previous year. The caves of Balamcanché, Loltún, and Uaymitún remained closed during this period, resulting in no visits.
October 2024 Visitor Numbers
In October 2024, the influx of visitors to Yucatán’s main archaeological and ecological zones amounted to 170,504 people, an 18% decrease compared to 207,985 visitors in the same month of the previous year.
