Influencer Denounces High Taxi Fares in Cancun

Luisito Comunica, a popular influencer, has publicly criticized the high taxi fares in Cancun, Quintana Roo. Through his Instagram stories, he expressed his frustration, revealing that he was charged 2,000 pesos (approximately 112 US dollars) for a 20-minute ride.

Alleged Overcharging by Taxi Company

According to Luisito, the taxi company Cabsi charged him 2,000 pesos for a transfer from Cancun airport to his hotel, using an economy class vehicle. This sparked a wave of reactions from his followers and other users who shared similar experiences and highlighted questionable practices by some transportation services in the region.

Outrage and Comparisons

“I am impressed with the entire taxi mafia here. I hired this driver in a Sentra car, for a 20-minute trip they charged me 2,000 pesos. Are they all cheap or what? That’s one hundred dollars for people from other countries,” he explained.

Luisito also compared the cost with transportation services in the USA and Japan. “One hundred dollars is what a taxi charges you, for example, in New York from JFK to your hotel in Manhattan, which is an hour or more away. That’s what a taxi charges you in Tokyo from the airport to your hotel. Here for 20 minutes, and I’m talking about bigger cars,” he said.

Call for Regulation

“The real villains in this situation are not the taxi drivers, they are not the drivers. But further back, commissions either from a union, from the airport itself, perhaps a kickback that they have to give to organized crime,” Luisito added. He emphasized the need for regulation to address these issues.

Controversy Over Taxi Fares

Reports indicate that Cancun Airport has become the most expensive destination for taxi services in the city. This key arrival and departure point for tourists is part of the 53 zones into which Cancun is divided, including areas such as the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres, the hotel zone, and the resorts.

Despite official rates established by the Government of Quintana Roo in 2017, which range from 34 to 37 pesos (approximately 1.90 to 2.10 US dollars) for transfers within the same zones, users often report being charged between 60 and 80 pesos (3.30 to 4.40 dollars), significantly higher than regulated prices.
