In 2024, the Mexican Caribbean achieved a significant milestone by welcoming over 20 million tourists. Despite a challenging year marked by global tourism disruptions and elections in Mexico and the United States, Quintana Roo’s tourism sector remained resilient, according to Bernardo Cueto Riestra, the state’s Secretary of Tourism.

The airports in Cancun, Cozumel, Chetumal, and Tulum played a crucial role in this growth, averaging 600 daily flights. On peak days, these airports handled up to 765 operations. Notably, Cancun International Airport recorded its highest activity on January 6, 2024, with 691 operations, followed by 676 on March 23 and 665 on December 28. Tulum International Airport also saw a record 56 flights in a single day on December 21.

During the first 20 days of December, the Mexican Caribbean received 38 flights from the United States, 27 domestic flights, 18 from Canada, 17 from Europe, and 16 from Latin America. The airports of Tulum and Cozumel added new routes throughout the year, contributing to sustained growth in strategic markets such as the United States and Canada, as well as the consolidation of European and Latin American visitors.

Mexico’s Tourism Secretary, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, reported that from December 14 to 20, hotel occupancy in the Mexican Caribbean was 78.4%. Costa Mujeres led with 83.2%, followed by Cancún with 78.6% and Puerto Morelos with 78.5%. The Riviera Maya hotels reached 79.5% occupancy, Tulum 75%, Cozumel Island 65.8%, Isla Mujeres 64.2%, and Gran Costa Maya 56.7%.
