The future of the MACAY collection is a major concern for Yucatecan artists.
The artistic community in Yucatán has raised alarms over the critical condition of the Museum of Contemporary Art Ateneo de Yucatán (MACAY) following the resignation of its director and the building’s takeover by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
Yucatecan artist Rosario Guillermo highlighted that, despite the absence of an official announcement, the closure of MACAY seems imminent after the departure of director Rafael Pérez, who had fought to maintain the museum’s autonomy.
One of the primary concerns for Yucatecan artists is the uncertainty surrounding the future of the MACAY collection. The potential dismantling of the museum and the lack of adequate space to protect the artworks pose a risk of dispersing or losing part of the region’s cultural heritage.
Former Yucatán governor Mauricio Vila was criticized for neglecting the museum. The new government is now expected to confront the INAH to defend the museum. Guillermo mentioned that the Ministry of Culture has taken steps to ensure that the removed pieces are transferred to universities and cultural centers.
Despite efforts by artists and citizens to demand the museum’s preservation, state and federal authorities have yet to provide a clear and decisive response. A public forum will be held in Mérida tomorrow to discuss the MACAY’s situation, seek joint solutions, and generate pressure on authorities to take urgent measures to save the museum.
