The number of compatriots visiting Durango doubled compared to the expected number, according to figures from the National Institute of Migration (INM), said Elisa Haro Ruiz, head of the Durango Tourism Secretariat.
She explained that the arrival of approximately 20 thousand compatriots to the state of Durango was expected, a figure similar to that of December 2023. However, the number of compatriots visiting was higher.
“The figures provided to us by the National Institute of Migration indicate that the number of compatriots arriving in the state doubled. Of the 20 thousand expected, there are 43 thousand, and the number could still grow,” said Haro Ruiz.
She explained that this increase in compatriots is due both to visitors arriving by air, since the number of flight frequencies doubled, and to those arriving by land.
The municipalities where the paisanos are most concentrated, in addition to the city of Durango and the towns near the urban area, are Santiago Papasquiaro, Canatlán, Nuevo Ideal, and Nombre de Dios. Many of them arrive in the city of Durango, spend a night and then go to see their relatives.
Several paisanos also arrived by air through the Torreón airport, and from there they went to the Laguna municipalities of Durango.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism acknowledged that several paisanos have already begun to return to the United States, but the final figures on their visit will be released by the INM until January 12, when the final cut is made.
