On the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States, Banamex’s political analysis area pointed out that the arrival of the Republican could represent a brake on the approval ratings of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The institution highlighted, in a special note as part of its daily economic report, that the president closed December with 73 percent average approval of her management, according to three surveys carried out by different institutions.
“The start of the Trump administration in the US could truncate Sheinbaum’s positive start. To the extent that several of the main lines of action with which Trump promises to start his government have enormous disruptive potential for Mexico,” the analysis area pointed out.
Mexicans approve of Sheinbaum’s management
Banamex assured that the relationship between both governments will be challenging especially for Mexico, so the President will have to prioritize negotiation, mainly on trade and tariff issues.
“She will have to prioritize negotiation, and take on the administrative and economic-social challenges derived from the impacts that labor disruption, the intensification of violence, and the disruption of the value chain linked to China would have on Mexico,” the financial institution indicated.
“In addition to the social and economic imbalances due to the arrival of thousands, perhaps millions, of deportees,” she added.
The institution noted that Claudia Sheinbaum’s current approval level reflects that more Mexicans than those who voted for her approve of her management today.
Banamex highlighted that the maintenance and even expansion of direct transfer social programs also supports Sheinbaum’s approval.
However, the bank’s analysis area warned that this level is below that obtained by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, since the latter in the first 100 days of his administration had 82 percent.
“Sheinbaum closed December with an average approval rating of 73 percent for her administration,” she said. “Although it is below the 82 percent that AMLO registered when crossing that same 100-day threshold, he did so in February 2019 because he took office on December 1, unlike her who did so on October 1,” she said.
“Sheinbaum’s approval rating is at a high level and, in fact, one that has been strengthened throughout her first months of government, in historical perspective, she is doing better than the other previous presidents,” the analysis area added.
