In a context of trade tensions between North American countries due to Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on his trading partners, Doug Ford, head of government of the Canadian province of Ontario, said that the relationship between Mexico and China is negatively affecting jobs in the North American region.
For this reason, Ford said that the Mexican government must decide whether to align itself with Beijing or with Washington, in a call to take a clear position within the framework of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), which must be reviewed in 2026.
The governor of Ontario expressed his concern about the entry of low-cost components from China into Mexico, which, according to him, are labeled as “Made in Mexico” before being exported to the United States and Canada.
This process, he said, is harming workers in both countries by displacing local jobs.
“It is unacceptable. Mexico has to decide. It is with Beijing or with Washington. “I can assure you that the Canadians are with Washington,” Ford said, stressing the need for a firm stance on the part of Mexico.
The provincial leader, who in the past went so far as to call for Mexico to be expelled from the USMCA, stressed that in his conversations with US officials, he has not found any complaints about Canada, but that the main problem identified is the influence of China in Mexican supply chains.
These statements come after Donald Trump, who is about to assume his second term as head of the US, threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian exports and suggested the possibility of annexing Canada through the “economic force” of the United States.
Trump’s position has generated a strong rejection in Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded categorically to these statements, stating that “never, but never” will Canada be part of the United States.
In this context, Ford announced that in February he will travel to Washington together with other provincial heads of government in Canada. The goal of this visit will be to reinforce the message that Trump’s proposed tariffs would not only hurt Canada, but also the U.S. economy.
According to Ford, Prime Minister Trudeau’s priority right now must be to prevent these protectionist measures from materializing, as they could have significant consequences for both nations.
According to Trump, as soon as he takes office on January 20, he will sign executive orders to impose the tariffs immediately.
