Winter storm covers Sonora with snow; roads are closed and classes are suspended

The second winter storm has begun to be felt in Sonora with temperatures of up to 10 degrees below zero in mountainous areas, snowfall and even suspension of classes and road closures.

The above, as a preventive measure against the fall of snow in municipalities in the northern and eastern region of the state, where low temperatures are expected to persist.

Closed roads

The fall of snow has been reported in Cananea and Nácori Chico, and it was expected to reach municipalities in the northern and eastern region of the state.

In view of this, the State Coordination of Civil Protection reported on the closure of the Agua Prieta-Janos highway for the safety of drivers and to prevent accidents.

Likewise, it announced the closure to vehicular traffic of Puerto Cananea, on the Ímuris-Cananea highway and in Puerto San Luis on the Janos-Agua Prieta highway section.

“Due to the Second Winter Storm, rain, sleet and snow conditions persist on roads, mainly in municipalities in the north, east and northeast regions of the state,” he wrote on his X account (@cepcsonora).

Through this same means, Civil Protection of Sonora reported that until 1:00 p.m. there were only reports of fallen trees and poles, especially in municipalities in the northwest, north, east and northeast regions.

“Minor damage such as fallen trees and poles, with no injuries, has been caused, so far, by the second winter storm in municipalities in the northwest, north, east and northeast regions of the state.

The State Coordination of Civil Protection maintains communication with authorities of the three levels of government, to carry out the operations and actions of attention, as well as prevention required.”

Suspension of classes and modification of school schedules
As part of the preventive measures, the suspension of classes in 41 municipalities was also announced, as well as the modification of the schedule in the rest of the entity.

Classes will be suspended on Thursday, January 9 in:

In the remaining municipalities, classes will start one hour later in the morning shift and the end of the afternoon shift will be one hour earlier in public and private elementary schools.

This modification will remain in effect on Friday, January 10 for the 72 municipalities of the state.

In a statement, the Secretariat of Education and Culture specified that the announced measures apply only to students from elementary to secondary level.

This, after it is expected that an extensive cold wave caused by cold front number 21 and the second winter storm will affect the mountainous areas of the state with temperatures between -12°C and -15°C, as well as the fall of snow and sleet.
