Not even 9 days have passed since January and Guanajuato has already been the scene of the murder of the first police officer of the year; this is Raúl ‘N’, identified as the commander of the municipal police of Guanajuato Capital. This crime opens the 2025 statistics of deadly attacks against elements of state corporations that, between 2018 and 2024, left a trail of 448 uniformed officers killed in the state.
According to the count carried out by the civil association Causa en Común in the state during the indicated period, the average number of police officers who have been killed, some on their day off, others in confrontations with organized crime and some more in direct attacks during their work day, is 6.22 per month, 74 per year.
The most violent year for police officers, in which the municipality of Celaya was the main target of attacks, was 2020, when 84 officers were killed; 2019 followed with 73.
It should be noted that, according to the record, the largest number of murders have been carried out against municipal police officers; followed by members of the Criminal Investigation Agency and, thirdly, members of the state’s Public Security Forces.
Between January 2018 and December 2024, at the national level, the number of officers who were victims of intentional homicide was 2,958, meaning that the state accounts for 15 percent of the total number of officers who died as a result of attacks, mainly from organized crime.
In fact, in 5 of the last 6 years, Guanajuato has led the list of federal entities with the most police homicides; in 2022 alone, Zacatecas surpassed the state by 10 more officers by registering 60 murders against police officers.
The number of police homicides dropped by 33 percent between 2023 and 2024, from 412 to 320, making it one of the least violent states against police officers, with the state of Guanajuato being the most dangerous and municipal corporations the most attacked.
Last year alone, the Causa en Común organization documented 61 police officers killed in Guanajuato, due to attacks or during confrontations with criminal groups; on the list of the most violent entities, they are followed by the State of Mexico (24), Guerrero (22), Chiapas (20), Michoacán (17) and Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Sinaloa, with 16 victims each.
Of the total number of uniformed officers killed, 186 were members of municipal corporations, 124 were state officers and only 10 agents belonged to federal forces.
Let us remember that, in addition to the murders of uniformed officers in Guanajuato, during 2024 there was an attack with a car bomb that exploded in front of the facilities of the Public Security Secretariat of the municipalities of Acámbaro and Jerécuaro, leaving three police officers injured, one of them seriously, in addition to damage to security buildings, nearby houses and at least 7 vehicles.
