Influencer Narabask, of Korean descent and born in Mexico, recently shared a harrowing experience on her social media during her visit to Cancun. She recounted how a taxi driver charged her an exorbitant 10,000 pesos for a short trip from the airport to her hotel in the Hotel Zone.
According to Narabask, the driver was aggressive from the start, but the situation worsened when he stopped at a 7-Eleven during the trip. Upon resuming the journey, the driver demanded payment in advance, claiming there would be no internet at their destination. He then drastically increased the fare, justifying it with additional charges for the stop and elapsed time.
The driver insisted that the 10,000 pesos charge was dictated by his “bosses” and threatened to take them “wherever he wanted” if they did not pay. Narabask, the only Spanish speaker in her group, felt particularly vulnerable during the negotiation.
After pooling cash from her friends, they managed to pay the fare and reach their destination. Narabask warned her followers about the risks of traveling to Cancun without a large group, advising against going alone or as a couple.
Narabask’s ordeal echoed a similar incident reported by influencer Luisito Comunica, who was charged 2,000 pesos for a 20-minute ride in Cancun. President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed Luisito Comunica’s complaint during a morning conference at the National Palace, acknowledging the need to review transportation rates to prevent abuse. She emphasized the importance of fair and adequate rates while promising to investigate and regulate prices to avoid such excesses.
Luisito Comunica expressed his outrage on Instagram, highlighting how tourists are being exploited with exorbitant prices for basic services.
