The Mérida City Council is set to launch a solar panel acquisition program in mid-2025, announced Raúl Escalante, director of the Municipality’s Environment and Animal Welfare Unit. This initiative aims to promote the use of alternative energies to reduce pollution.
Escalante noted that while the parameters for Mérida residents to access this support have not yet been established, the issue is already on the agenda.
In an interview about the economic benefits of solar panels, Escalante highlighted a significant increase in requests for property tax discounts related to solar panel installations. This year, requests have surged by over 300 percent compared to the same period last year. Data from the Environment and Animal Welfare Unit indicate that more than 400 applications have been received, up from fewer than 100 in 2024.
Escalante confirmed that residents can receive a 15 percent discount on property taxes for solar panel installations made before applying. For installations made afterward, the discount is 10 percent. To qualify, residents must confirm the property’s location, present official identification proving ownership, and demonstrate that 30 percent of their electricity consumption comes from solar panels.
“It is positive that people seek to acquire this type of equipment that uses energy from the Sun, you no longer have to resort to burning oil to obtain it. We are stopping consuming more polluting energies,” Escalante said.
He also emphasized that beyond these benefits, users will save on both property taxes and electricity costs. Although there is no official date for the solar panel acquisition program, it is expected to become a reality by mid-year.
Solar panels offer several advantages, including a long lifespan, significant energy savings, short-term investment recovery, replacement of polluting energy, and easy installation.
