This afternoon, a police operation involving various military units caused significant traffic congestion on the Tulum-Playa del Carmen stretch of federal highway 307, near Akumal.
The operation began around 6 p.m. and lasted for approximately two hours. Elements of the State Police, Mexican Army, National Guard, and State Attorney General’s Office were positioned on one side of the road, without stopping motorists for inspections.
Motorists were surprised by the heavy police presence and reported the operation on social media. The officers occupied nearly one lane in both directions, leading to long lines of slow-moving traffic.
The reason for the police operation remains unknown, and it is expected that one of the involved agencies will issue a statement soon.
