The National Seismological Service (SSN) has reported that there have already been 416 aftershocks after the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Coalcomán, Michoacán.
During the early hours of this Sunday, January 12, the earthquake was recorded at 02:32:53 hours, at the coordinates 18.49° latitude and -103.49° longitude, with an estimated depth of 30 kilometers.
“Until 1:00 p.m. on January 12, 2025, 416 aftershocks of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Coalcomán, Michoacán have been recorded,” reported the SSN.
The most intense aftershock reached a magnitude of 5.1, according to the Seismological Service report and was recorded at 04:46 hours.
No major damage after earthquake: Ramírez Bedolla
The governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, reported this morning that so far “there are no major damages” after the strong earthquake recorded in the state.
The strong tremor mainly shook the municipalities of Coalcomán, Lázaro Cárdenas, Aquila and Coahuayana.
The epicenter was recorded in Coalcomán and minutes later Governor Ramírez Bedolla called on the population to remain calm.
DN-III-E Plan Activated
The National Defense Secretariat activated the DN-III-E Plan in its prevention phase after the 6.1 magnitude earthquake. It was reported that elements of the National Guard and the Mexican Army are patrolling the municipalities where the earthquake was felt most intensely, that is, Coalcomán, Chinicuila, Lázaro Cárdenas, Apatzingán, Uruapan, and Morelia.
The uniformed officers are patrolling the areas in collaboration with elements of the State Civil Protection and in coordination with local authorities they are verifying the condition of buildings, public spaces and roads.
So far, serious damage has been ruled out after the earthquake that occurred early Sunday morning.
