The Israeli embassy in Mexico strongly condemned the act of vandalism committed against the wax figure of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, displayed at the Wax Museum in Mexico City.
The incident, captured on a video circulating on social media, shows a hooded activist visitor destroying the statue with a hammer while shouting slogans such as “Long live Palestine, long live Sudan, long live Yemen, long live Puerto Rico!”.
In an official statement, the diplomatic delegation described the attack as a “detestable action that sends a dangerous message of violence, intolerance and hatred, which exceeds any legitimate criticism.” It also called for the protection of art and cultural expressions from similar acts.
“The Embassy hopes that cultural institutions take measures to prevent acts of vandalism such as the one we witnessed and protect the art on display, within the framework of an open and respectful dialogue,” the embassy said in its statement. The incident has sparked controversy on social media, with opinions divided between those who condemn the act of vandalism and those who justify it as an expression of political protest.
The figure of Netanyahu was one of the attractions of the Wax Museum in Mexico City, but is now irreparably damaged after the attack. So far, the museum has not issued an official statement regarding the incident nor have any legal actions been reported against the person responsible.
