Belize Urges Sheinbaum to Extend Mayan Train to Guatemala

Belize’s Prime Minister, Johnny Briceño, has made two formal requests to President Claudia Sheinbaum to extend the Mayan Train to Guatemala. The first request involves extending the track by over 7 kilometers to cross the Hondo River into Belize. The second stage aims to further extend the track to reach the Guatemalan border.

“The plan is for the Mayan Train to reach Belize and then Tikal, Guatemala. We have sent a letter to the president and also discussed it with her personally in Mexico City. We want it to cross the Hondo River and reach the Guatemalan border,” Briceño stated.

Briceño added that they are awaiting a response from President Sheinbaum before proceeding with resource allocation and construction.

In October 2024, the Mexican government was negotiating with Guatemala to connect the Mayan Train from Yucatán to the Petén region, home to iconic sites like Tikal. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo was in talks with Mexico to establish routes from Chetumal, passing through Belize, and another from Tenosique, Tabasco, directly to Flores, Petén.

“We are working to connect Petén with the Mayan Train in Yucatán. We have made progress in negotiations with Mexico, which has already shown us its support,” Arévalo said during a press conference.
