A horde of townspeople outnumbered National Guard (GN) officers and snatched a detainee from them, who is allegedly the nephew of a criminal leader in the region and a generator of violence on the southern border of Chiapas.

The events occurred at an immigration control checkpoint, located between the municipalities of Metapa de Domínguez and Frontera Hidalgo, around noon on Friday.

According to videos posted on social media, a young-looking man with a goatee, black hair, dressed in an olive green shirt and with a gold chain around his neck, was in the back of a GN patrol car, when townspeople rushed against the security agents.

The arrested man was identified as the operator and nephew of Horacio de la Cruz Mazariegos alias “El Botana”, the boss of the Pacific Cartel in the region, who is credited with coordinating criminal activities such as drug trafficking from Central and South America to central and northern Mexico, and part of the chain that transports it to the United States.

In the recordings, it can be seen that no more than 70 people confront the guards, pull them away from the patrol car where the arrested man is; they manage to get into the backseat and get him out and then free him.

“Get him out!”, “Hey bro, calm down!”, “Throw him on the floor!”, “Help me (get him out)!”, the inhabitants are heard saying.

Men pulled him by the arms and legs, in an environment in which insults were thrown between agents and citizens. Later, the alleged nephew of “El Botana” fled in another truck, while the inhabitants escaped running.

On the part of the GN elements, they had long weapons, two patrol cars and a force of at least 16 agents.

It was revealed that the alleged generator of violence was taken by his employees to the border of Guatemala to avoid national justice.

The criminal group of “El Botana” is also accused of trafficking, extortion and kidnapping of migrants, forced disappearances, protection money, murders and attacks on security elements.

The state Attorney General’s Office and the National Guard have not issued an official statement on the matter.
