A commander of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Tabasco (SSPC), José del Carmen Lázaro, was assassinated on Saturday morning. Lázaro, who was the director of the Investigation Agency, was shot on Alonso Taracena Street, at the corner of Gregorio Méndez Avenue, in the Nueva Villahermosa neighborhood, as he was leaving a private university where he taught.
The active police officer was attacked by armed men in a black pickup truck. He received at least three bullet wounds and was left lying on the street in front of his vehicle.
Lázaro had previously survived an attack on October 27, in which four of his colleagues were killed during an ambush in the Indeco neighborhood. They were conducting an undercover investigation and were ambushed by criminals hiding in a house where drugs were being sold. Lázaro led the operation, but the drug dealers had been tipped off, resulting in the deaths of four police officers.
