Cancun Taxi Driver Intimidates Peruvian Tourists for Using Ride-Hailing Service

A taxi driver in Cancun intimidated Peruvian tourists who chose to use a ride-hailing service instead of his taxi. The incident occurred outside the City Express Plus hotel and was captured on video, which was shared on social media.

The driver, affiliated with the local taxi union, approached the tourists in his white Suburban van, marked with the economic number 3490 VIP. He demanded that the ride-hailing service be canceled, claiming he could not pick up passengers there. When the tourists insisted on their right to choose their transport, the driver became angry and ordered security personnel to prevent them from leaving.

The video shows the driver using explicit language and threatening the tourists, stating, “I don’t care if you’re tourists, it’s my job.” He then insulted the occupants of the ride-hailing vehicle with stronger words.

After the initial confrontation, the taxi driver accelerated his vehicle to continue the intimidation, revealing that his van only displayed an economic number, not the official one on the back.

This incident adds to a growing list of aggressions against tourists in Cancun, particularly in the Benito Juárez municipality. Despite numerous complaints and videos exposing such behavior, the authorities of the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo have not responded.

Additionally, there have been reports of disproportionate charges by taxi drivers, both at the airport and elsewhere, often highlighted by influencers and other social media users. The lack of action from authorities has left many tourists feeling vulnerable and frustrated.
