35 stretches of road closed due to snow in Chihuahua

Due to the presence of ice or snow on the asphalt, 35 sections of state and federal highways were closed in Chihuahua. 25 were partially opened during the day and 10 remained impassable, after the snowfall of the second winter storm, reported the State Coordination of Civil Protection of the state.

It detailed that at least 50 municipalities registered snowfall, while in Ciudad Juárez and Ojinaga there was sleet precipitation.

Meanwhile, at dawn in the northwest region and the Sierra Tarahumara the temperatures were extremely cold, as they ranged between minus 12 and 22 degrees, reported the meteorological stations of the Fruit Growers Union.

In the La Junta section, municipality of Guerrero, the minimum was minus 22 degrees; Las Cruces, Namiquipa, reported minus 11.5; Bachíniva, minus 12.7; the Mennonite community Campo 101 minus 14; El Molino, in Namiquipa, minus 17; the Pascual Orozco town minus 19, and Mesa Miñaca minus 21 degrees.

State Civil Protection announced that in the town of San Juanito, municipality of Bocoyna, the temperature dropped to minus 21 degrees; in Madera, to minus 20, and in Temósachic minus 17.

To prevent road accidents, the State Public Security Secretariat, through the Traffic Police, announced the temporary closure of various avenues in Chihuahua, due to the fact that the pavement froze by minus 6 degrees at 7 am on Saturday. Traffic was also suspended on the Cantera and Washington avenues, Mirador and Washington, as well as Misión de Satevó and Mirador, due to imminent risk of accidents.

In Durango, the Meteorology and Hydrology Department of Conagua revealed that Saturday’s temperatures were the lowest of the current winter season, as the thermometer reached minus 16 degrees in the mountains and minus two in the state capital.

It snowed in the municipalities of Guanaceví, El Oro, Durango, Canatlán, Peñón Blanco and Guadalupe Victoria; the first three are located in mountainous areas.

On the other hand, Civil Protection of Sinaloa in a statement warned that the Mazatlán-Durango highway was closed to traffic in both directions due to snowfall and crystallization of the pavement.

In the state of Mexico, after the intense snowfall that fell in the upper part of Xinantécalt, on Friday afternoon-evening, the General Coordination of Civil Protection decided to close the accesses to the upper part of the volcano for an indefinite period.

Cold and humid conditions continued on Saturday, so snow was also reported in high areas of Toluca, mainly in the area above three thousand meters above sea level.

State police set up surveillance posts in the Los Venados park to prevent tourists and curious people from climbing to the top of the Nevado de Toluca, which is expected to remain closed for at least 48 hours.

In Coahuila, there was snow and sleet in Saltillo, Arteaga and surrounding municipalities. Visitors arrived in the Sierra de Arteaga, although there were also warnings about the formation of ice on roads.

Meanwhile, in León, Guanajuato, of 105 citizens who live on the streets and are vulnerable to low temperatures, only 40 have agreed to go to shelters, reported the director of Civil Protection, Crescencio Sánchez.

The National Meteorological Service reported that cold front 23 will enter through the north and northeast of Mexico, with an associated polar air mass and the drag of humidity by the subtropical jet stream; while cold front 22 and the polar air mass that propelled it will stop affecting the country.
