Increase in Durango-Mazatlán highway fares raises concern

Since January 10, the Durango-Mazatlán highway, operated by Caminos y Puentes Federales (Capufe), registered a 5.5% increase in the cost of its toll booths, a measure that already affects motorists, transporters and the commercial sector of the region.

With this increase, round-trip freight transport reaches a cost of 6,260 pesos, making this highway one of the most expensive in the country. For passenger buses, the price now amounts to 3,106 pesos, while motorists must pay 1,568 pesos for a round trip, compared to the 1,486 pesos charged in 2024.

Nayeli Victorino García, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) in Durango, said that this tariff adjustment will have a direct impact on the final prices of the products, due to the increase in freight costs.

“As merchants, we are concerned that the increase in freight will be reflected in consumer prices. This not only affects transporters, but also the pockets of families and local businesses,” he said.

Despite the increase, the highway faces serious infrastructure problems. Local businessmen have denounced the lack of maintenance of the concrete on the road and on the bridges, as well as the existence of 56 irregular accesses.

Users have particularly criticized the toll booths in Coscomate and Mesillas, which have the highest rates in the region. Faced with this situation, representatives of the business sector held meetings with Capufe and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), demanding urgent repairs.
