The Transpeninsular Highway in Baja California Sur is in disrepair; patches are being put on some sections

With alarming deterioration in large sections of its 998 kilometers, from Cabo San Lucas, in the municipality of Los Cabos, to Guerrero Negro, in the municipality of Mulegé, the Transpeninsular highway that corresponds to Baja California Sur presents an alarming deterioration that puts motorists at risk, since in some spaces with potholes, asphalt patches were put in place, but the state government has already passed the ball of the problem to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) to take charge of the modernization and rehabilitation of this road that links the two Baja Californias.

The SICT in BCS reported that the budget allocated by the Federation to rehabilitate this road is 70 million pesos, works that supposedly should have started in November 2024 to be completed in February of this year 2025.

However, motorists who travel on this road have denounced on social networks with photographs and videos, the terrible conditions in which this road is found, with potholes in many sections and which have even caused tires to burst.

The Governor of the state, Víctor Castro Cosió, said several days ago that the work to rehabilitate this road was going “very slowly” and pointed out that in several sections it was no longer possible to patch, since a complete resurfacing of this road officially known as “Carretera Transpeninsular Benito Juárez” or “Carretera Federal 1” is required.

The state leader said that although he is aware that this road needs urgent repairs, he pointed out that they would be carried out in the most dangerous sections, but that these tasks will take time to complete, due to the time that the bidding process will take for those interested in this work.

Likewise, and by passing the ball of the problem to the SICT, Castro Cosío stressed that “I already said it a few days ago and I confirm it, we call on the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation to act as soon as possible,” because we do not know why the federal authority stopped maintaining this important road.
