Relatives of missing persons in Baja California Sur protest in Mexico City’s Zócalo; they blame the Sinaloa Cartel

Relatives of missing persons in Baja California Sur believe that the violence caused by the conflict in the Sinaloa Cartel has reached their state, where at least five victims of disappearance have been registered in the last few days.

Faced with the lack of attention in their state, on Wednesday, January 15, they traveled to Mexico City to ask for the intervention of the federal government.

Relatives accuse the FGE of ignoring them

MILENIO spoke with Camelia Vega Gallegos, mother of Juan Ulises Vega, who disappeared on Monday, January 6 in Guerrero Negro.

The relatives do not rule out that the disappearances are linked to the conflict waged by the Sinaloa Cartel:

“It could be, it could be, because from the comments and the little information we have received, it is a probability.”

It is worth mentioning that the protesters arrived at the Zócalo in Mexico City, where they were heard by members of the National Search Commission.

The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Baja California Sur is accused of being negligent, as it took a long time to publish the search files.

State Governor Did Not Receive Relatives

“Actually, I was telling them about my anguish over the time that has passed, because it has been several days and the probability of finding him alive is getting smaller every day,” added Camelia Vega Gallegos.

A few days ago, relatives of the missing persons went to La Paz, Baja California, with the intention of speaking with Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, who supposedly did not receive them, which caused anger among the relatives.

For now, on Thursday they will demonstrate outside the national palace from 5:00 in the morning hoping that the federal government will listen to their prayers for help.

Violence in BCS: Clandestine graves

In November of last year, on a private property, where desert flora and fauna of Baja California Sur are found, search groups located nine clandestine graves with at least 14 human remains.

The discovery was documented at the beginning of October at kilometer 4.5 of the highway from La Paz to San Juan de la Costa.

Gabriel Manríquez, coordinator of the Colectivo Búsquedas X La Paz, reported that they have been digging for at least three weeks with picks and shovels in graves one and a half meters deep, enduring temperatures that exceed 30 degrees Celsius and facing reptiles (vipers) and insects (tarantulas and scorpions) whose poisons could be deadly.

“The third week is about to pass. The graves were double, triple. A red light began to come on, telling us that it was a clandestine cemetery that had been used for years. In total we have nine clandestine graves with 14 human remains,” he reported.
A few kilometers from the urban area, towards the northern exit of the municipality of La Paz, the first discovery was made at the beginning of October by the group Sin Ellos No.

For months, this group followed up on their investigations and, after reporting the initial discovery in the company of the authorities, the Búsquedas X La Paz group joined various events in the area.

Due to its experience in this type of cases, Búsquedas X La Paz proposed the hypothesis that the bodies found correspond to victims who disappeared in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In that period, the entity registered more than a thousand intentional homicides, according to the Semáforo Delictivo portal, which documents the country’s crime statistics in graphs and comparisons of the 32 entities.
