Guanajuato is home to one of the most important and visited wine regions in Mexico thanks to its wine tourism offer in vineyards very close to destinations such as San Miguel de Allende, a World Heritage City, or the magical town of Dolores Hidalgo.
One of them is Tres Raíces, where in addition to the traditional tastings and tours of its plantations, you can be part of the activity ‘Winemaker for a day’, a workshop where you will make your own wine, guided by experts.
What is the Tres Raíces vineyard like?
Tres Raíces is a relatively young vineyard, as its plantation began in 2012 and the production of wines and the construction of its main building began in 2016, although it was not until 2018 that it opened its doors to the public.
It has 36 hectares where 12 varieties of grapes are planted, with which 4 commercial lines of wine are created.
Some of them, by the way, have won awards in international competitions such as the Catavinum World Wine & Spirits Competition, Decanter World Wine Awards and the Mexico Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
In addition, Tres Raíces is made up of some buildings with architecture that combines modernity with the past. They house the winery, its underground cellar, a restaurant called Terruño and the boutique hotel Casa Raíces.
Where is the Tres Raíces vineyard?
The Tres Raíces vineyard is at kilometer 73 of the highway between San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato.
From both destinations it is about a 40-minute drive. From CDMX it is approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes.
What is the winemaking workshop like?
‘Winemaker for a day’ is an experience where you will become a wine expert for a couple of hours, because with the help of sommeliers and experts, you will be able to create your own wine label.
At the beginning, you will be given a guided tour of the production cellar and the underground cellar, where you will mainly learn about the winemaking and aging process to familiarize yourself with the production of this drink.
Afterwards, you will be given a tasting to evaluate a pair of wines (Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah) taken directly from the barrel. At this point, the sommelier will help you in the tasting and choice of varieties to put together your own blend.
Once the combination is ready, it will be time for you to bottle it, cork it and label it with a personalized design. Of course, you can take the bottle home.
How much does the winemaking workshop cost?
The ‘Winemaker for a Day’ workshop costs $1,200 pesos per person. It includes the activity, guide, tasting and personalized 750 milliliter bottle.
The experience is available from Monday to Friday at 11:00 a.m.
Reserve your spot on the official Tres Raíces website or by calling (415) 113 5250.
