Economic Impact of Festivals in Tulum: Portilla Calls for Transparency

Festivals in Tulum attract thousands of tourists and generate significant economic benefits for the community, according to councilor Jorge Portilla Mánica. During a Facebook Live broadcast, Portilla emphasized the importance of transparency in the income generated by these musical events and how they are regulated by authorities.

Portilla highlighted the need for the city council to disclose the revenue from taxes and other sources to avoid complaints and criticisms, such as those arising from a recent incident where a community’s mobility was partially affected by the blockage of the only access road.

In response, Portilla has formally requested that President Diego Castañon Trejo establish the Committee of Shows and Entertainment, as mandated by law, to regulate and supervise musical events. He also asked the Treasury to provide information on the contracts, permits, and revenue associated with these events.

Portilla stressed the importance of transparency in ticket authorizations for mass events, the permits granted, and the officials responsible for regulating these festivals.

He reiterated that while festivals bring numerous benefits to Tulum and elevate the municipality’s international profile, the city council must act with complete transparency and adherence to the law. The revenue generated should be used to improve public services, streets, and garbage collection, ultimately enhancing the lives of citizens.
