Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Mexico’s federal Secretary of Tourism, announced collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to streamline the electronic visa process for Brazilian visitors and facilitate the entry of Colombian travelers into Mexico.

Rodríguez emphasized the significance of the 2026 Soccer World Cup for tourism, highlighting the need to expedite access for South American visitors. She noted that Mexico must implement a “free traffic” immigration policy to accommodate the influx of tourists.

“We are actively working on this. For Colombians, incorporating them into our airlines can reduce the number of rejections,” Rodríguez stated.

The secretary underscored the importance of Colombian tourists, who represent the largest group of Latin visitors to Quintana Roo. However, current policies by the National Institute of Migration (INM) have led to a significant loss of these visitors.

Colombians are the largest group of Latin visitors to Quintana Roo each year. “It’s not easy; it’s a matter of foreign affairs and national security. This issue needs to be addressed in working groups, not just in migration but in other areas as well. It’s already on the agenda, and we hope the World Cup will be a great opportunity,” Rodríguez added.

According to official data from the Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), the International Airports of Cancún, Cozumel, and Mérida rejected over 32,000 foreigners last year, with the majority coming from South America. In 2024, 17,012 travelers from Colombia were denied entry.

The Cancún International Airport alone rejected 31,981 foreigners from around the world, while the Cozumel International Airport and Mérida Airport rejected 25 and 22 international travelers, respectively.
