Oaxaca is positioned as one of the most visited destinations in Mexico

Appearing before the legislators of the Permanent Commission of Tourism of the LXVI Legislature, the Secretary of Tourism of Oaxaca, Saymi Pineda Velasco, reported that the entity is experiencing a profound transformation in the tourism field, positioning itself as one of the most visited destinations in Mexico and the world.

In the Glossary of the Second Report of the governor of the state, Salomón Jara Cruz, he reported that, from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024, the tourist influx was 6 million 138,068 people, with a cumulative hotel occupancy of 44.10%, while the economic impact reached 21,909 million 444,857 pesos.

She highlighted that Oaxaca has a tourism sector that is moving towards modernity, through works such as the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway, which registered a vehicle flow of 1,081,353 units, from February to September 2024.

The state official indicated that, during July, the month of the Guelaguetza, the city registered a hotel occupancy of 82.72%. The arrival of tourists showed an improvement of 3.63%, with 138,634 visitors, who left an economic spill of 525.75 million pesos, 20.65% more than in 2023.

Likewise, in the last quarter of 2023, the State Program of Regional Guelaguetzas was promoted, with the Guelaguetza Ñuu Savi in ​​Huajuapan de León and in the city of Oaxaca de Juárez during October; the Guelaguetza del Mar in Puerto Escondido in November; and the Guelaguetza Ni Wan do’o in San Mateo Río Hondo in August 2024, which together generated an economic impact of 29 million 327 thousand pesos and an influx of 24,443 visitors.

According to the state government, as a result of the strategies implemented to promote and preserve cultural and natural heritage, Oaxaca received various recognitions for its gastronomy, beaches and promotion of sustainable tourism, such as “Best state to taste and discover its traditional and ancestral cuisine” and the Guelaguetza as the “Best ancestral celebration to connect with our roots”, from the magazine México Desconocido.

Likewise, 18 Oaxacan restaurants were included in the first selection in Mexico of the Michelin Guide 2024; In addition, the restaurants Levadura de Olla and Los Danzantes were awarded a Michelin Star, while Alfonsina, Cobarde, La Olla, Labo Fermento, Las Quince Letras and Tierra del Sol were recognized with the Bib Gourmand award.

Pineda Velasco highlighted the presence of Oaxaca in both national and international issuing markets, in events such as the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, Spain; the Anato Tourism Showcase in Colombia; the Tianguis Turístico in Mexico; the tianguis de Pueblos Mágicos; among other platforms, with strategies implemented under a vision of economic development, sustainability and respect for cultural identity.
