The first earthquake recorded in Coahuila this 2025, which occurred last Monday with a magnitude of 3.7 degrees 53 kilometers southwest of Saltillo, marks the beginning of a year in which seismic activity could confirm the existence of new seismic zones, one of them that includes the Southeast region of the state. This Wednesday, the State Coordination of Civil Protection of Zacatecas reported two new tremors in its territory, of 2.9 and 2.3 degrees, between 07:00 and 07:20 hours, both with an epicenter near the Zacatecan capital.
The Secretary General of the Government of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes, highlighted that after the initial reports, personnel were mobilized to the affected areas to assess possible damage. “No damage to people or their property was reported,” he assured.
Since 2024, in collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the National Seismological Service (SSN) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), geological studies have been intensified in Coahuila and Zacatecas. These investigations seek to determine the exact causes of the telluric movements that, according to experts, could be related to the four new seismic zones identified in the north of the country.

The Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL) revealed in a recent investigation that the new seismic zones include the Southeast of Coahuila, the borders with Zacatecas and Nuevo Leon, as well as other regions such as Torreon to the north of Cuatro Cienegas, Muzquiz and the border of Piedras Negras with Texas.
SEISMIC ACTIVITY IN COAHUILA IN 2024
According to data from the SSN, during 2024 Coahuila reported 19 earthquakes, with the majority concentrated in the Southeast region, where Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe recorded nine events. Other affected areas included Múzquiz, with four tremors, and San Buenaventura, with three.
The earthquake recorded in Saltillo on Monday could be an indication that activity in the region will continue. Jorge Gallardo Álvarez, State Coordinator of Civil Protection of Zacatecas, explained that the recent tremors in his state had depths of between seven and eight kilometers, which reinforces the need for constant monitoring.
