Tulum Authorities Deny Disappearances at Electronic Music Festivals

Tulum’s head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, Captain José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, has clarified that no individuals have gone missing during the recent electronic music festivals. In a press conference, he detailed the incidents involving four foreigners—three women and one man—who faced various situations.

Rodríguez Bautista highlighted the case of Evelyn, a Canadian national, who was found in a vulnerable state. The organizers of the electronic music event at the Zamná cenote provided her with protection and referred her to the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG). She was sheltered and given lodging in the coastal area while her friends and family were contacted.

The second incident involved Nika, a German citizen. Her phone’s SOS emergency system was activated, prompting the consulate to monitor the situation. However, it was later discovered that her phone had simply run out of battery, and she was never in any danger.

Another case was that of Daniela Bravo, a young Chilean woman who was reported missing. A search was conducted, and she was found recovering from a fall and injury at the Hospital del Bienestar in Tulum. Communication with the Chilean consulate led to her father coming to take her home safely.

The fourth case had a tragic outcome. Yerko Antonio Reyes Sanhueza, also known as “Anton,” a young Chilean man, was last seen in the early hours of January 13, 2025, at a Keinemusik collective party in Zamná, Tulum. Rodríguez Bautista announced that Reyes Sanhueza died of cardiorespiratory arrest at the Amerimed hospital in Tulum. The Chilean consulate and the Attorney General’s Office are handling the repatriation of his body. The 29-year-old arrived in Tulum the previous week to take a DJ course.

Rodríguez Bautista concluded by stating, “These are the four reports (of incidents) that we have. There are no missing people in Tulum, and none of them have to do with disappearance or security events in this winter season.”

It is also worth noting that on January 9, a Canadian tourist was found dead inside the Mudra Tulum hotel in the La Veleta neighborhood, apparently due to an overdose of illicit substances.
