The Light Rail project in Campeche is progressing steadily, with 58.34% completion and an investment of 4.2 billion pesos. The project is scheduled to begin operations on April 30, 2025.
According to Miguel Ángel Gallardo López, Secretary of Administrative Modernization and Government Innovation (SEMAIG), this electric, non-polluting system will connect the Maya Train station with the ‘Ing. Alberto Acuña Ongay’ International Airport and the Historic Center. The Light Rail will cover 15.2 kilometers with 14 stations and a stop at the airport. It is a DRT-type train that will travel on a magnetic rail.
The train will have a capacity of 300 users per frequency, with six doors, two cabins, and two operators. It will travel at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour and have a service interval of 15 minutes, with five vehicles in operation.
A Control and Maintenance Center is being built, interconnected with the C-5, located behind the old train station. No trees were sacrificed; instead, they were replanted, and the fauna in various sections, mainly bats, has been protected.
Bernhard Rehn, Secretary of Urban Development, Mobility, and Public Works (SEDUMOP), revealed that the executive project is 100% complete; the rolling surface is 73% complete; the 14 stations are 58% complete; the Control and Maintenance Center is 15% complete; and the rolling stock and systems of the five DRT buses are 65.5% complete.
Additionally, drainage works are 38% complete; urban planning, including sidewalks, curbs, gardening, and parks in La Ermita and Los Farolitos, is 9% complete; and environmental measures are 83% complete. The overall progress is 58.34%.
The Light Rail project is generating 853 direct jobs and 474 indirect jobs, with operations expected to begin on April 30, 2025.
