Insecurity in Mazatlán: A Growing Concern

Insecurity in Mazatlán is not an isolated event, with violent incidents occurring daily, according to councilwoman Maribel Chollet Morán. She attributes this situation to the legacy of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, arguing that his “hugs instead of bullets” policy failed to address security issues in Mexico.

“The former president lacked a security strategy, and these are the consequences. Now, with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, we hope the strategy will be strengthened and yield results soon,” Chollet stated. “We deserve a strategy that truly offers security to Mexicans.”

Families and productive sectors are demanding the return of security to Sinaloa, particularly in Mazatlán. The PRI councilwoman noted that while incidents were isolated in September, recent weeks have seen daily reports of violence.

Chollet reiterated that the country’s insecurity crisis is a result of poor public policy by the previous government. Over the weekend, there were multiple violent incidents each day.

On Saturday morning, a shooting occurred in the rural area of San Francisquito, Mazatlán. That same day, one person died on Delfín Avenue, another was executed in the World Cup invasion, and a shooting in Prado Bonito left two wounded. On Sunday, two people were killed in the Francisco Villa neighborhood.

Following these events, Municipal Secretary of Security and Transit Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdés emphasized that the security strategy has not been neglected. “After the incidents in the Francisco Villa neighborhood, security was reinforced, and it was ruled out as a high-risk area.”

Despite these efforts, another shooting occurred on Monday morning against a house in the same Francisco Villa neighborhood.
