New rules: Migrants adjust their path in Oaxaca after the cancellation of CBP One

At the “Brothers on the Road” shelter in Oaxaca, they report a decrease in the number of people seeking to cross into the United States. This is due, among other reasons, to the cancellation of the CBP One application, a tool that allowed people to schedule appointments at border points to obtain a humanitarian permit.

Migrants exchange the American dream for the Mexican one
At the shelter, a group of 30 to 40 migrants reflect on their future.

Among them is Larry, a young Honduran, who said that he has decided to look for opportunities in Mexico instead of continuing his journey to the United States.

“CBP One is no longer working and the people who are migrants are being held there at the border. There are many people like that. In my opinion, I’ll stay here. I’m going to stay here to sort out my papers.”

This panorama contrasts with the figures from last year, when at least 16 caravans crossed the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Some of these were dissolved by Mexican authorities, but others managed to reach the border with the United States, mainly before Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Decrease in migratory flow in Oaxaca

The migratory flow in the south of the country has decreased significantly in recent weeks, according to testimonies collected at the Oaxaca shelter.

The stricter measures on the northern border and the cancellation of CBP One have forced many migrants to rethink their destinations.

The situation at the shelter reflects a mix of uncertainty and resilience, as some migrants now seek regularization in Mexico as a viable alternative to improve their living conditions. However, the lack of tools such as CBP One represents a significant obstacle for those who wish to request humanitarian support in the United States.
