In celebration of World Environmental Education Day on January 26, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) has kicked off “Environmental Education Week” at the Velio Vivas Valdez elementary school. The Directorate of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA) is promoting ongoing programs to conserve the natural environment.
Key initiatives include the protection of sea turtles, coral cleaning, and bird monitoring and observation. These activities aim to instill the importance of environmental care in the new generation.
Juanita Alonso Marrufo, general director of the FPMC, emphasized that these actions align with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. “We are working to form generations that are conscious and responsible with their natural environment,” she said.
The “Environmental Education Week” will continue at the following schools:
– Tuesday: Adolfo Escalante elementary school
– Wednesday: Eladio Novelo Gil school
– Thursday: Juan de Grijalva school
– Friday: Andrés Quintana Roo school
In total, 215 third and fourth grade students will participate in interactive and educational activities.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, director of the CEA, explained that biologists and natural resource managers from the FPMC lead the sessions. “We use educational materials and activities so that children can learn in a fun way to understand and care for the environment,” he said.
Throughout the week, participants will discover the physical structure of corals and learn about the characteristics of sea turtles, birds, and butterflies. They will be encouraged to share this knowledge with their friends and family.
These initiatives highlight the FPMC’s commitment to environmental preservation, with education as a fundamental pillar for the sustainable development of Cozumel.
