The Secretariat of Rural Development (Seder) has reported that the locust plague in Yucatán was controlled over 135 hectares between January 3 and 13, according to the State Committee for Plant Health of Yucatán (Cesvy).

The affected lands span 11 municipalities: Panabá, Buctzotz, Telchac Pueblo, Cacalchén, Hunucmá, Dzoncauich, Sucilá, Temax, Teya Pueblo, Mérida, and Opichén. Cesvy stated that the control measures were implemented both by land and air, targeting 21 swarms of flying locusts and one group of locusts that had not yet developed wings.

Locust Species

The Central American locust, “Schistocerca piceifrons piceifrons,” is one of the oldest pests known for its migration, reproduction, and voracity. These locusts are observed twice a year, influenced by wind speed and direction. During the rainy season, they travel from west to east, while in the current season, they move from east to west in search of deep soil areas for mating. They migrate during the day as the humidity in the afternoon and evening makes their wings heavy, complicating their flight.

In 2024, control activities were carried out in 64 municipalities, with 17 of them receiving specific attention. The public is urged to report any sightings of locusts to Cesvy at 9999460410 or 9999460010.
