The arrival of the new Cold Front Number 24 has activated weather alerts in several municipalities of Veracruz this Tuesday, January 21. Specifically, this meteorological phenomenon has caused extreme weather conditions and temperatures in several points of the central mountainous area and the Perote Valley, where temperatures have reached zero degrees Celsius (°C).
In this sense, municipalities such as Chiconquiaco, Landero and Coss, Rafael Lucio, Huayacocotla and Las Vigas woke up to reports of sleet and other winter weather conditions in these localities, which has led to cars, streets and even vegetation being covered with layers of ice and snow in the last few hours.
The historic snowfall in Las Vigas
As soon as the population of the different towns reported the beginning of the frosts, social networks began to be flooded with videos and photographs that showed how Cold Front No. 24 had brought them, after so long, a series of snowfalls that had not been recorded since 2018; that is, for more than seven years.
The first images that began to circulate were taken by Jessica Luna Lagunes, head of Hydrometeorology at the National Water Commission (Conagua). On her personal Facebook account, Luna Lagunes captured the white layers of frost and snow that covered a couple of parked vehicles.
In an interview for local media, the official also detailed that the snowfall had occurred after 5:40 p.m.:
.”It has not snowed in Cofre de Perote, it is even clear. Here the situation is that the freezing level reached Las Vigas, but the humidity is not in the Cofre part, that is, at more than 4 thousand feet, there is no humidity,” he stressed, while recalling that in November 2018 was the last snowfall that was recorded in the municipality of Las Vigas.
Likewise, users of the social network X managed to circulate a couple of videos that showed the capacity that the phenomenon had with some natural areas and vegetation known by the population. From strong gusts of wind, rain, humidity and falling trees in these spaces.
The response and cancellation of face-to-face classes
Given these adverse weather conditions, the State government, through the Secretariats of Education of Veracruz (SEV) and Civil Protection, decided to suspend classes at all educational levels and in the 212 municipalities of the entity for this Wednesday, January 22.
The Secretariat of Civil Protection of Veracruz has issued a “gray alert”, due to the entry of the arctic air mass. Minimum temperatures of -10 to -5 °C are expected, with frost in some areas. In addition, cloudy skies, drizzle and fog banks are forecast in the High Mountains region.
The population is advised to stay informed through official sources and follow the instructions of local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the educational community and the general public.
