A new case of harassment and scam by Cancun taxi drivers has surfaced on social media. The victim, a Venezuelan content creator named Rufas, shared his unpleasant experience in the popular tourist city.
In a video, Rufas recounted the events of December 28, when he and his friends were vacationing in various destinations in Quintana Roo. They planned to travel to Tulum for a music festival and decided to use a taxi service.
Aware of Taxi Scams
Rufas mentioned that he was already aware of taxi scams targeting foreigners. He requested a driver from the Uber platform, which charged him less than 2,000 Mexican pesos according to the app. Upon the Uber’s arrival, the driver asked Rufas to sit in the front seat. As they continued their journey, a group of taxi drivers intercepted them.
Confrontation and Fear
The taxi drivers confronted the Uber driver and even hit one of the windows, causing fear among Rufas and his friends. They decided to get out and request a taxi instead. “I know that taxis are scammers, but we are a large group, I think we can pay for it together,” Rufas said.
Exorbitant Fare and Threats
During the trip, they asked the taxi driver about the fare, and he quoted 3,000 pesos. Shocked by the amount, they decided to get out of the taxi. The driver then threatened the group, warning that he would call some “friends” if they refused to pay. He even shouted and attacked one of the girls in the group.
In the end, Rufas allegedly paid the fare but advised others to be cautious with Cancun taxi drivers and to report any similar scams.
