Teachers on the warpath: 48-hour strike and blockades in Oaxaca

7

Primary school teachers in Oaxaca began a 48-hour work stoppage to demand improvements in educational infrastructure and to allow retired teachers to pass on their positions to their relatives.

This mobilization, promoted by Section 22 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), is part of a series of protests in which they seek to have their demands addressed by state and federal authorities.

What other actions will teachers in Oaxaca take to have their demands heard?

As part of the actions scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, teachers have set up a massive sit-in in the state capital, with the intention of blocking access to the Government Palace, preventing the entry and exit of personnel. In addition, blockades have been organized on various federal highways.

The teachers say that this pressure measure is necessary due to the lack of response from the authorities, as they argue that the infrastructure in many schools is deficient, they lack basic supplies and in some communities the schools do not have adequate services, which affects the performance of the students. They also reiterated their demand that retired teachers be able to pass on their positions to their relatives, a demand that has generated controversy due to the regulations in force in the educational sector.

So far, the state government has not issued an official statement on the strike and protests continue in different parts of the state.
