Due to the threat of immigration policies, the United States has been a point of concern for those compatriots who have settled in the region, since their stay would be at risk of being revoked. In the face of speculation, the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles shared reliable information to moderate the uncertainty that has arisen due to alerts of ‘massive raids’ in the entity.

After his rise to the presidential office, Donald Trump threatened to implement executive orders aimed at the repatriation of migrants in the North American country, as a result of which, the media opinion shows concern regarding the situation of the compatriot sector, which has unleashed collective panic. Because of this, in local media there have arisen countless rumors in reference to the ‘large agglomerations’ of Mexicans arriving in the Republic, information that has not been confirmed so far.

Mexican Consul denies mass raids

Through social media, the head of the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles, Carlos González Gutiérrez, reported on the alleged mass raids that plague the town. For his part, he confirmed that since the immigration decree, the diplomatic agency has addressed multiple concerns of countrymen who are in uncertainty about the next scenario.

In response to speculation, the agency went to verify these assertions with immigration authorities, where it was determined that the entity had not carried out such large-scale raids. As part of its work, the consulate makes two daily visits to the Immigration Detention Centers, and only the repatriation of 17 compatriots was considered, a number that is not so far from the usual averages.

The assessment was obtained last weekend, as the administration declared that on Friday the use of the authority for “expedited deportation” would be expanded, which generated uncertainty among the compatriots. It is important to mention that the aforementioned arrests were made only to people who had some kind of previous record with the agencies in charge of enforcing the law in the United States.

“We do not see any evidence that there are massive raids, that people are being stopped at random on the street or that operations are being organized in churches/schools. We do not see any of that. Of course, the situation can change at any time, in which case, we are the first responsible to go to you to inform you,” said the consul.
For this reason, the consulate recommended that migrant sectors stay informed through reliable sources, in addition to contacting the agency in case of a crisis, at the following numbers:

Consular Protection Emergencies at 213-219-0175
Information and Assistance Center for Mexicans 520-623-7874
“I see no reason for them to stop doing their usual activities, it is very important that the information always comes from official sources (…) Our work as consulates begins by providing crucial attention and verifiable information to our citizens,” he said.
