Legal Dispute Turns Deadly: Home Dispossession Leads to Attacks on Lawyers in Carmen

A couple of lawyers has faced a series of attacks after dispossessing two people of their homes, resulting in the death of one.

On December 19, 2024, lawyer Claudia Gabriela López González and her partner Julio César Gómez Ezquiliano managed to take possession of a property on Boquerón del Palmar Avenue in the San Nicolás neighborhood after a legal dispute with the owner, Rosa María Hernández. On December 2, around midnight, Hernández reported that Ezquiliano, along with a court clerk and police officers, had forcibly removed her from her home, leaving her belongings on the street.

Four days later, on December 23, 2024, Julio César Gómez Ezquiliano was shot dead in the parking lot of Sams Club in the Malibrán subdivision. Investigations suggested possible revenge for the property dispossession or an act by an anonymous avenger angered by the eviction of Hernández.

On January 26, 2025, Claudia Gabriela López González was attacked outside her home on private street 19-B by 36-A in the Guadalupe neighborhood. Unknown assailants set fire to her white Ford EcoSport pickup truck, leaving it completely burned. Witnesses reported that earlier that day, López González and her brother had been involved in another home dispossession.

Municipal authorities and the department’s prosecutor’s office are investigating the attacks, indicating that López González’s life may be at risk. The line of investigation focuses on the dispossession of properties through legal proceedings, which López González allegedly uses to her advantage.
