The head of the Secretariat of Environment, Biodiversity, Energy and Sustainability, Karime Unda Harp, highlighted that the Government of the Oaxacan Spring promotes strategic axes for environmental conservation and protection that allow sustainability.
Within the framework of the Second Report of Governor Salomón Jara Cruz, she highlighted the actions carried out in the proper management of solid waste, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources, river sanitation, climate change, energy and environmental education.
Sustainable municipalities
When appearing before members of the Permanent Commission of Environment, Biodiversity, Energy, Sustainability and Climate Change of the LXVI Legislature of the State Congress, the official specified that, through the Program for Strengthening the Capacities of Municipalities in Matters of Solid Waste in the State, 150 advisory and training meetings were held.
164 requests for planning and management of equipment for waste management were also attended to and advice was provided to 60 municipalities in Valles de Centrales, Istmo de Tehuantepec, Sierra de Juárez, Mixteca and Costa; for the elaboration of their strategic plans aimed at the separation of waste with a focus on circular economy and promotion of an environmental culture.
As part of the Closure Program of the Metropolitan Final Disposal Site located in the municipality of Villa de Zaachila, in 2024 the State Government invested 650 thousand pesos in the implementation of an emergency operation to control leachate leaks, managing to contain and recirculate around 2.3 million liters, reducing the risk of contamination and damage to the public health of the population surrounding this site.
Also, to reverse the deforestation processes in the state and as part of the strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources and their biodiversity, sustainable projects are promoted in priority conservation areas in Oaxaca.
Thus, with an initial investment of 1 million 528 thousand 324 pesos from the Global Environmental Fund (GEF), the project “Promoting sustainability in the Agave-Mezcal value chain through the restoration and integrated management of biocultural landscapes in Oaxaca” was launched.
For the sanitation of the Atoyac and Salado rivers, six working groups were set up with 27 municipal authorities and agrarian representatives from Valles Centrales. As a result, 21 diagnoses were validated, which led to the same number of municipal work programs, and 11 field trips were carried out in the Atoyac river basin to recognize the territory and address the environmental problem.
Actions to counteract climate change
In collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), work began on updating the State Program for Action on Climate Change (PEACC) 2022-2028, for long-term decarbonization. In addition, 18 verification visits were made to industries located in the Costa, Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Papaloapan Basin and Central Valleys regions.
On the subject of renewable energy, an agreement was signed with the National Center for Natural Gas Control (Cenagas) that will allow a series of actions to be developed with various economic sectors to provide them with cheaper, more efficient, safer and cleaner energy. In this sense, a strategy was developed so that the Metropolitan Zone of Oaxaca has natural gas, first in the productive sector and later at the housing level. This transitional hydrocarbon will be able to reach Oaxaca in the next 18 months.
Strengthening environmental culture
To promote a culture of respect, protection, and care for water and the environment, the first Center for Environmental Education and Interpretation (CEIA) “Ñuu Kuu” was inaugurated, which promotes learning and reflection on the care of nature; 75 training sessions on environmental issues have also been given in 24 municipalities in the Valles Centrales, Costa, Sierra de Juárez, Istmo and Mixteca regions, benefiting 2,925 people.
Finally, Secretary Karime Unda thanked the deputies for their coordinated work to promote the Animal Welfare Law, and their support in the sessions of the Advisory Council of the Cerro del Crestón Protected Natural Area and for their interest in promoting a green fund for the benefit of communities in environmental matters.
