500% Increase in Suicides Among Girls in Tabasco

During the previous six-year period, the number of suicides among girls in Tabasco increased by 500%.

From 2019 to November 2024, the Ministry of Health reported 94 suicides among minors. While cases among boys show a downward trend, suicides among girls have increased from two cases in 2019 to 10 in 2024.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Health to El Heraldo de Tabasco, 94 minors, including both girls and boys, ended their lives between 2019 and November 2024. The number of child suicides rose from seven cases in 2019 to 21 in 2022, and 16 in 2023. By November 2024, six male minors had committed suicide, totaling 57 cases over the last six years.

During the same period, 37 girls took their own lives. The number of cases increased from two in 2019 to five in 2020, with a reduction in 2021. In 2022, nine girls committed suicide, a figure that remained the same in 2023. By November 2024, 10 girls had taken their own lives.

94 cases of minor suicides were recorded in 13 of the 17 districts of Tabasco. The municipality of Centro reported the highest number, with 23 suicides from 2019 to 2024, followed by 18 cases in Huimanguillo and 12 in Cárdenas. Jalapa reported only one minor suicide in the last six years. No suicides were reported in Cunduacán, Emiliano Zapata, Jalpa de Méndez, and Jonuta during this period.

In November 2024, the Ministry of Health launched a permanent campaign to prevent suicides, citing alarming numbers in Tabasco. The results of this campaign are yet to be seen.
