The Secretary of Government, Elisa Hernández Romero, announced that preparations will begin in February for the construction of 23,000 social housing units in Campeche as part of a presidential program.
Hernández Romero stated that the characteristics of the properties will determine whether the houses built will be apartment-type or conventional. The project, announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to build 23,000 social housing units throughout Campeche during her six-year term. A portion of these units will be allocated to students.
Of the 23,000 homes, 8,000 will be built by Infonavit and 15,000 by Conavi. These homes will be accessible to people with incomes of 1 to 2 minimum wages, and applicants must not own property. The process of acquiring the houses will be communicated by both the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit) and the National Housing Commission (Conavi), as stipulated in their operating rules.
The government is in the process of identifying properties in the municipalities of Campeche, Carmen, Escárcega, Candelaria, and Palizada for the construction of the houses. The federation aims to begin implementing the program between February and March 2025. Some municipalities have already started collaborating with the presidential project by donating land to reduce costs, allowing the federal government to invest in basic infrastructure such as water and electricity.
Hernández Romero emphasized that although the tender for the construction of the houses will be a federal matter, priority will be given to local construction companies. The quality of the houses will be monitored with state and municipal supervision.
