In 2025, Tulum saw a significant increase in reported animal abuse cases, with six complaints filed this month alone, compared to previous months. Armando Angulo Cáceres, Director of Environmental Sustainability, highlighted the success of dissemination campaigns and urged citizens to report any instances of animal abuse.
Since taking office in October, Angulo Cáceres reported that from October to December 2024, seven cases of abuse were received. In January 2025, six complaints have already been registered, all of which have been resolved—one through mutual agreement and the others before the civic judges of the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection when abuse was proven.
Following instructions from municipal president Diego Castañón, prompt attention and follow-up have been given to reported cases, encouraging the population to report any aggression towards animals. “From October to December of last year, we had seven complaints made by citizens to be attended to by the Directorate and the Coordination of Animal Welfare; all of these cases were concluded. This month of January, we already had six, of which two have been presided over by the issue of abuse and four have been concluded,” Angulo Cáceres explained.
The implementation of the number 984-143-1434, enabled us to receive complaints through WhatsApp, has allowed for faster and more efficient responses. “Thanks to this communication channel, we can immediately draw up the complaint records and follow up on each case as quickly as possible,” he commented.
Angulo Cáceres emphasized the importance of continuing to promote a culture of reporting, which not only contributes to the protection of animals but also strengthens the community’s commitment to preserving animal welfare in the municipality. Citizens can also visit the Environmental Sustainability Department, located in Plaza Andador on Ook’ot Avenue in the Maya Pax neighborhood, to file a complaint and provide evidence for follow-up.
