The Transpeninsular Highway, the most important road in Baja California Sur, will not be modernized in 2026, as stated by the state governor, Víctor Castro Cosío.
Although improvements have been made in its condition with state resource interventions in the second half of 2024, the situation is unsustainable without a deep repair, according to the governor.
The highway, built in 1973, has received its corresponding maintenance year after year, but in 2024 no investment was made in its traditional repair.
Castro Cosío asked that signs be placed in the most dangerous sections to reduce speed and announced that there are already resources to resurface some points, although he warned that the tender “takes time.”
This is an important investment, with a budget of 50 million pesos to repair the most urgent sections, however, the modernization of the highway is not included in this year’s budget, according to the governor.
“I believe that this year’s budget does not include the modernization of the highway. It is a proposal and the President has her say. We hope that the budget will be initiated,” he reiterated.
The modernization of the Transpeninsular Highway is a priority issue for the region, since it is a fundamental route for tourism and trade.
The lack of investment in its maintenance and modernization has had negative consequences for the local economy and the safety of drivers.
