Mexican avocado producers, who are experiencing one of their best moments of the season due to the euphoria of the Super Bowl, are confident that exports “are on the right track” amid tensions with the United States and the tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump.

“We do not want to speculate, given that this is a very delicate issue between authorities, what we do hope is that we are on the right track, by the time the issue is reviewed because for us it is obviously the future vision of the industry,” Armando López Orduña, general director of the Association of Producers and Packers Exporters of Avocado of Mexico (APEAM), told EFE.

The director referred to the tariffs that the United States could impose, where the Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, indicated on Tuesday that February 1 remains in effect as the date of entry into force of the tariffs that Trump promised due to the flow of migrants and drugs from Mexico.

According to figures shared by López Orduña, the economic value of the avocado season in Mexico is 3 billion dollars, while in the United States its trade and sale contribute 4.2 billion dollars.

In Mexico, avocado producers increase exports to the United States in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl to the point where in the first four weeks of 2025, according to APEAM, some 110,000 tons of this fruit have been sent to US soil to make guacamole, mainly.

In addition, producers consider that the importance of the tariff issue being resolved in a favorable way is even greater given the number of people who are employed around avocado exports.

According to figures shared by López Orduña, there are 78,000 direct jobs and 300,000 indirect jobs generated by this industry.

APEAM also states that its main consumer of avocado is the United States, a country where per capita consumption is currently 4.1 kilograms, with its best events being the Super Bowl and May 5, when the Battle of Puebla is commemorated and families gather in the US and include guacamole in their celebration.

Super Bowl LIX, that is, the NFL (National Football League) final, will be held on February 9 in New Orleans between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Meanwhile, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, said this Wednesday in her morning press conference that she “does not believe” that tariffs will be implemented, although she assured that she has a plan to deal with them.
