Less than a month after a massacre of seven people in a bar in Villahermosa, Tabasco, armed men attacked and set fire to a beer store on the Villahermosa-La Isla highway on Sunday, killing at least four people.

The incident occurred at the “Las Miches” establishment located in Colonia Miguel Hidalgo, where the armed commando opened fire and subsequently set the place on fire, while witnesses reported the presence of tire-puncturing objects on the road.

Among the victims was an employee, who died after being taken to a hospital, and three customers, whose bodies were recovered charred.

In the midst of a spiral of violence due to a dispute between the criminal organization “La Barredora” and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), another armed attack was also recorded in Colonia Sibilla Zurita, about 5 kilometers away from the first incident, where at least two people were executed, according to local reports.

Just last January 26, an armed group shot at people attending a nightclub in the municipality of Cárdenas, leaving two dead and one injured.

Local media also reported the arrest of 16 people during an operation carried out by ministerial authorities on a ranch in the municipality of Nacajuca, where firearms, live ammunition and drugs were seized.

According to local reports, on Friday night two human heads were found in rows in Cerrada Río Grijalva, second section of Casa Blanca, in the municipality of Centro (Villahermosa). The discovery was made in front of the gate of a primary school, where a banner with a threatening message was also found.

Another man was found dead next to a narco-banner in a rural area of the state capital and three young people were shot during a clandestine motorcycle race on Bicentennial Boulevard, near the El Country subdivision.

The armed dispute for control of Tabasco between the CJNG and “La Barredora” has involved the state in levels of violence never seen before, which caused a 297 percent increase in intentional homicide during the beginning of the Administration of Morena member Javier May.

According to official statistics, since the start of May’s Government – last October 1 – and January 14, 306 intentional homicides were recorded, while in the same period of 2023-2024 the state reported only 77 victims of this crime.

The constant clashes between “La Barredora” and the CJNG for control of Tabasco, a key entity for migrant trafficking and the theft of fuel from Pemex, raised the level of violence with the dismemberment of people, a characteristic hallmark of organized crime to intimidate antagonistic cells.
