Catamaran Accident Rocks Cozumel: Foreign Tourists and Local Among The Victims

Cozumel, Mexico – A distressing incident unfolded on the island of Cozumel when five people were catapulted into the air after a catamaran’s propeller activated while they attempted to board. The victims, including four Argentine tourists and one Mexican national, suffered cuts on their calves during the unexpected incident.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred in the afternoon of February 2nd, south of Cozumel island, as the tourists returned from snorkeling. Despite sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, the group sought medical assistance after requesting help from the catamaran’s crew.

Paramedics from two ambulances arrived promptly at the scene and transported the injured to a local dock. The patients were then transferred to a private hospital for further treatment of their wounds.

The incident has sparked an investigation by Cozumel’s Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Lifeguards’ department, led by Director Alfredo Arellano Villaseñor. Thankfully, none of the victims suffered injuries that posed a risk to their lives or limbs.

As part of standard procedure, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has opened an inquiry into the events surrounding the catamaran accident. The investigation aims to uncover the circumstances leading up to the incident and provide clarity on the matter.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols and guidelines when participating in water activities, particularly in areas with high tourist traffic like Cozumel island.
