A major incident occurred on Wednesday when a wagon carrying ballast derailed near the Mayan Train station in Limones, Bacalar, Quintana Roo, leaving one person injured. The incident has sparked widespread concern about the safety of the train’s operation and allegations of corruption surrounding its construction.
According to eyewitnesses, the derailment occurred during early hours on Wednesday but was not reported until after 5:00 p.m. Local authorities, including the Mayan Train personnel and National Guard elements, were deployed to assess the damage and determine the cause of the accident.
The incident has prompted a call for suspension of operations by Ernesto Sánchez Rodríguez, federal deputy of the PAN party. “It’s essential that we know the safety, structural, and construction reports of the Mayan Train before allowing it to continue operating,” he said in an interview.
This is not the first time that the Mayan Train has derailed. In March last year, a wagon went off the track at Tixkokob station in Yucatan, putting people’s lives in danger. Sánchez Rodríguez pointed out that poor quality materials and lack of transparency in contracts have been major concerns.
He also accused the government of covering up the incident and ignoring reports about the safety risks associated with the Mayan Train. “This is a clear example of corruption and malice, which put people’s lives at risk,” he said.
In addition to demanding a halt to operations, Sánchez Rodríguez has announced plans to file complaints against leaders of the previous administration responsible for the construction of the Mayan Train. He also called for an investigation into links between construction companies and the family of former President López Obrador.
The PAN party has vowed not to let corrupt officials from the López Obrador government get away with their alleged wrongdoing, particularly in relation to the involvement of his children in the project. “We will not remain silent while those responsible are protected,” Sánchez Rodríguez emphasized.
