Through social media, the famous Tacos Ruben’s, located in the Miguel Hidalgo district of Mexico City and once featured in a Netflix documentary, have announced their definitive closure after 20 years of service, due to threats and extortion by organized crime gangs.

“With great sadness we want to share news that we never thought we would have to give. After 20 years of effort, dedication and love for our work, we are forced to close ‘Tacos Ruben’s’ permanently. The reason is none other than the extortion and threats we have received, which makes it impossible to continue safely,” reads the publication that the business made through its Instagram account, accompanied by a moving video that shows some memories.

‘Tacos Ruben’s’ highlighted and thanked the preference of its customers, because its stand was not only a place that sold tacos, it also became the meeting center for entire families that left countless anecdotes.

“We have no words to express how painful it is to make this decision. Our business was not only a place where we served tacos, but a space where we shared laughter, stories and unforgettable moments with each of you. Here we saw families grow, celebrated birthdays, heard anecdotes from a lifetime and witnessed the warmth of our community,” the statement added.

Tacos Ruben’s arrived on Netflix

Located at Av. José Martí #199, Escandón I Sección neighborhood, this street stand run by Mr. Rubén Orozco, part of the second of three generations of owners, offered service from Monday to Saturday from 6:00 to 11:00 PM, serving tacos with suadero, tripa, cabeza, lengua and more.

The flavor of their tacos and the high demand from their clientele caused Netflix to notice Tacos Ruben’s and include them in the second season of the documentary ‘Las crónicas del taco’, which precisely shows some of the most famous tacos found throughout Mexico.
