The assault that occurred last weekend against American hunters in El Ocuca directly affects the hunting activity that takes place in the state and that this season has seen a 30% decrease, said Francisco Villa Martínez.
The general director of the Association of Hunting Organizations of the State of Sonora (Asocies) indicated that hunting in Sonora has the potential to increase fivefold this season’s influx, but after these criminal acts there is no way to achieve it.
He pointed out that the roads that lead to the mountains of Sonora, mainly to Yécora, and those that lead to the Desert in the North of the State are often subject to assaults where the vehicles are taken from the occupants, but until this weekend it had been against Mexicans.
Last year the influx of hunting tourism was reduced by 30% and these events maintain these figures, there is no way for it to recover if these cases stop occurring, on the contrary it tends to get worse,” he pointed out.
After the murder of rancher Alejandro Morales in Querobabi, he admitted, the authorities reinforced security with more personnel and patrols from the different corporations, but this was not enough to cover the most unsafe areas.
We hope that now with the agreement that they (Mexico and the United States) made to strengthen the borders, perhaps it can benefit a little the feeling of security in the border area, because hunting has potential but has contracted due to insecurity,” he stressed.
