The British shipping company Saga Cruises has selected the Port of Progreso in Yucatán as a key stop for its Spirit of Discovery Cruise, which recently arrived with 896 passengers and 499 crew members.

Historic Event

This is a historic moment, as Yucatán is the only Mexican destination included in the itinerary of this prestigious cruise. The state government eagerly announced that the Spirit of Discovery is on a 50-day journey through the Americas, departing from England with 1,396 people on board. This marks the first time this luxurious ship has docked in Progreso, highlighting the growing international interest in Yucatán’s tourism.

Ceremonial Welcome

On behalf of Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, Secretary of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR) Darío Flota Ocampo led a special ceremony to exchange plaques with the ship’s captain, Franko Papic. Flota Ocampo emphasized the significance of Saga Cruises including Yucatán in its route, offering European tourists a chance to experience the rich Mayan culture.

Detailed Itinerary

The Spirit of Discovery set sail from Portsmouth, England, on January 6, visiting several international destinations including Portugal, St. Lucia, Barbados, the Grenadines, the Antilles Islands, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Belize, Progreso, Texas, and Bermuda, before returning to England on February 24.

Exploring Yucatán

The 896 European passengers, primarily English, along with the crew, have the unique opportunity to explore Yucatán’s cultural and natural wonders. Highlights include visits to iconic Mayan sites like Chichén Itzá and other beautiful tourist destinations in the region.

Luxurious Experience

The Spirit of Discovery is designed to provide a luxurious onboard experience, featuring 100 cabins for solo travelers and comprehensive amenities to ensure a comfortable and exclusive journey. Saga Cruises covers expenses for drinks, tips, special meals, room service, internet access, and even provides a local driver for port excursions.

Sustainability and Innovation

The Spirit of Discovery excels in sustainability efforts, equipped with a centralized water heating system that reduces pump power by 65 kW, saving 200 MWh annually and contributing to environmental protection. The ship is also designed according to the polar code, enabling it to navigate frozen waters in compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

Tourism Impact and Government Collaboration

The arrival of the Spirit of Discovery is a significant boost for Yucatán’s tourism. Collaborations with the State Government are helping to establish the Port of Progreso as a key destination for international cruises. This fosters new opportunities for promoting Mayan culture and sustainable tourism, attracting tourists from Europe and beyond.
